このたび鴨江アートセンターでは、当館アーティスト・イン・レジデンスにて滞在制作をしたアーティスト河合ひかるさんの展覧会を開催します。
本作は、一枚の旗と、その旗のなりたちを追う映像作品を、人々が行き交う公共空間に展示する小さなインスタレーションです。河合さんは、太陽光を用いて印画する写真技法サイアノタイプを用いて、その場そのとき、ともにいた人々と、各々の「自分を表すもの」を一枚の布に焼き付け、掲げることにより旗としました。
旗の公開は2/17から、映像作品の公開は2/23からを予定しています。

　現代における旗は、その集団を代表するような意匠が使われ、１つの記号の元に人々を集結させ、象徴するものとして使われています。過去のあらゆる旗を見ていくと、大抵の場合、旗が存在するところには大なり小なり「戦い」があるのです。
　浜松にゆかりの無い私は、滞在中に様々な方に出会いました。外からやって来たアーティストの私が、皆さんに対して出来ること。それは、はたづくりでした。 　
　ひとつの記号の元に、集団を象徴させるのではなくて、ひとつの意匠にまとめない、戦いのためじゃない、私たちがこの大地の上に居る証としての新しい旗づくりをしてみたい。自分たちが自分を表すものを自分の手で選んで、みんなで旗の上に置く。そしてここ、浜松に落ちる太陽の、自然の力でそれを記号化する。だって私たちはみんな違うし、昔から違っていたし、これからも違って、ずっとそこにいた/いるのだから。（河合ひかる）

アーティストプロフィール

河合ひかる　KAWAI Hikaru

2022年武蔵野美術大学造形学部油絵学科油絵専攻卒業
現在、東京藝術大学大学院美術研究科先端芸術表現専攻修士課程在籍中

日本と中国にルーツをもち、東京で育つ。家族とは国籍・母語・姓が異なっている。これらの背景から、文化的に構築された国籍・人種・言語などといった、人々をカテゴライズする「境界線」に関心を持つ。これらの優位性を揺らがせることを目指し、個人的な体験や記憶を手がかりにしながら、境界線を語りなおしている。
主な展覧会に『亲爱的声音-親愛なる声へ』(個展、コートヤード広尾、2023年、東京)、『出会いー物語のはじまり』(軽井沢ニューアートミュージアム、2023年、長野）がある。

The Kamoe Art Center is pleased to present an exhibition by artist Hikaru Kawai, who have been an artist-in-residence here.
The work is a small installation of a flag and a video work displayed in a public space where people come and go. Using the photographic technique of cyanotype, in which sunlight is used to make prints, Kawai printed some pictures with the people who gathered at the time and place. Printed motifs were what each of them “represents himself or herself”, and they were printed on a piece of cloth. The cloth was then raised to become a flag.
The flag scheduled to exhibited from February 17, and the video work from February 23.

Artist’s messege

Flags in the modern age are used to represent a group of people, to rally people around a single symbol, and to symbolize them. Looking at all the flags of the past, there has usually been a “battle” to some degree wherever the flag has existed.
As someone with no connection to Hamamatsu, I met many different people during my stay. As an artist from the outside, what could I do for them? The answer was making a flag. 　
I would like to make a new flag that does not symbolize a group of people under a single symbol, that is not a single design, that is not for fighting, but as a proof that we are here on this land. We chose with our own hands what we want to represent ourselves and place it on the flag together. Then we symbolized it with the power of nature, with the sun poured here in Hamamatsu. Because we are all different, have always been different, will always be different, and have always been there/will always be there. Hikaru Kawai

Artist Profile

Hikaru KAWAI

Graduated from Musashino Art University, Department of Painting in 2022.
Currently enrolled in the Master’s program of Tokyo University of the Arts, Graduate School of Fine Arts, Department of Inter Media Art.

I was raised in Tokyo with roots in Japan and China. My nationality, native language, and family name are different from those of my family members. Because of these backgrounds, I am interested in culturally constructed “boundaries” that categorize people, such as nationality, race, and language. Aiming to shake up these dominance, I recount the boundaries using my personal experiences and memories as clues.
My major exhibitions include “亲爱的声音- Dear Voice” (solo exhibition, Courtyard Hiroo, Tokyo, 2023) and “Encounter: The Beginning of a Story” (Karuizawa New Art Museum, Nagano, 2023).
